After ascending the throne, it was not unusual for earlier Fire Lords to violently eliminate their siblings due to them being potential rivals. The royal family was historically marked by numerous disputes and power struggles, and its control over the Fire Nation was often undermined by the country's powerful noble clans. The family has been in power for many centuries, though its various branches formed many dynasties, including the Pho Zel Dynasty. From that moment on, the Fire Lord and their family ruled the nation. However, the Fire Lord eventually gained more power and split off from the Fire Sages, becoming its own position. Even the son of the cabbage merchant-whose crops Aang accidentally ruined, repeatedly-makes an appearance in The Legend of Korra. After its unification, the Fire Nation was originally ruled by the Fire Sages, with the Fire Lord at their head. In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Aang and his friends visit Wan Shi Tong's library looking for a way to defeat the Fire Nation. Driven mad, he is still wandering there, decades later. One of the more obscure returning characters in The Legend of Korra, Zhao was a former nemesis of Zuko's, who killed the Moon spirit in his mortal life, damning him to wander in the Fog of Lost Souls after. Those six are the main returning characters, but there are a handful of additional cameo appearances from Avatar in The Legend of Korra. Iroh also becomes the namesake for Lord Zuko's grandson. He reappears as a Spirit World guide several times over the course of the series. Decades after the events of Avatar, Iroh left behind his mortal body and entered the Spirit World, where he opened a tea shop. Though he's already old in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Zuko's mentor and former Fire Nation general Iroh makes a surprising appearance in The Legend of Korra. Iroh, chill as ever, in 'The Legend of Korra.' Nickelodeon Animation Studio
